Where I am coming from, I just want her to have the happiest life she has
left. Just wish well a lot of things. That is why a consult with the Center
for Independent Living, IL folks at the blindness agency, Occupational
Therapist, should get you some good information on things she can do. Moneys
available to help her live and give her a goal. Then we can ask the Lions
Club, her disability foundation (remember my disability foundation bought me
the hearing aids I have now). The grant would also buy me most any adaptive
item to make me independent, i.e. lift for my car or van, power chair, stair
lift, etc. So, assuming now, she is a severe diabetic, they might have
grants to help her get out of her home and enjoy life.   

Too, one of the things we learned in Social Work, is people have choices. We
can't make people do something they don't want to. She wants a craft or
something to do while sitting on that machine, and I am just stumped, other
then what she is doing now, listening to books.  

She could learn to use an Echo Dot, if the dialysis place would let her use
their internet and download the app. Foru twelve hours a week she can listen
to podcasts, play games, get fact, learn about the people on TV, all kinds
of fun things. The Dot, with a battery attachment is totally portable and
voice controlled. . Look on Amazon for the Echo Dot. It's like fifty bucks.
The battery pack is like twenty something dollars. 

Just wish I knew how to help.

I know I can pray for her and her family. So that is what I shall do.

Have you thought of writing to President Mark Ricabono and describe this
lady's situation.  He might know of a source that could provide her with
some assistance.  There might be a chaper that would be willing to cover her
internet expences.  
We could even take up a collection, here on the list, to get her a
refurbished computer and maybe a chapter could sponcer for the internet
expences.
I sure wish she were here in MD, where I could lend a helping hand.  It can
not hurt to ask!

Becky, When I told her I would lay something in her lap and she told me she
did not have a lap, I assumed her legs were off almost to the hip.  We used
her stomach instead.  Tn doesn't have a program to provide her with a
computer; and she does not have the funds to purchase one.  If I could get
someone to purchase a computer for her, I could not teach her.  TN will not
permit the teachers to teach technology.  If all the hurdles were resolved,
then, there is the issue of innernet.  She cannot afford innernet.  
I do appreciate all the input I am receiving.

Linda, double amputee doesn't necessarily means she has no legs. Usually
they themselves will describe if you ask gently. I have a double amputee
friend that has both knees. So he could hold things between his knees. I
didn't ask what he did during dialysis, but my guess is he worked on his
computer as he had a job to keep up with.  He now walks, smile, with
artificial legs. Another acquaintance has her foot off. She came within a
whisker hair from losing the second foot. The doctors don't amputate the
entire leg unless it is to save a person's life. The mailman whose les were
crushed in an accident had one leg off to  not quite his hip and the other
below his knee.

With that computer she can take classes to learn to write or design or any
number of wonderful things. I hope she has a PCA (Personal Care Attendant)
to take the load off her mother, smile. With the PCA she can feel more in
charge of her life.

Yes, Cindy, she is taking her didgital player to dialysis and listening to
books.  Remember she is an amputee and has no legs to hold anything with.

Linda,

During dialysis, perhaps she could practice holding the weaving sticks
between her legs so that she could weave. The ball of yarn could be in her
bag easily be pulled from. If that caused any problem, she could get someone
to look up on the internet how to make a yarn ball holder out of a two liter
bottle. This would make her yarn easy to use and make sure it stays where it
belongs plus the plastic bottle would be light weight (most of the people on
dialysis tend to carry bags that would be big enough for this to easily fit
in).

Does she have a small portable daisy book player (victor, bookport, or even
a phone)? This would also help her pass the time (usually four hours three
days a week) and it would allow her to have something to occupy her while
she is learning whatever craft she decides on to be proficient enough to
handle it while at dialysis.

Tell her we are all pulling for her and wracking our brains to come up with
something she can manage.

Thanks, Terry, She wants something to do during dialysis.  I don't think
this would be appropriate.  I will ask her about doing it this summer at
home, however.  She has grandchildren, which she may want to make something
for.  Souldn't that be a good momento for her grandchildren to have later?

In thinking more about your student. I just found an old article about
making Mosics. Working with plaster, easy to mix and place things in it to
make coasters and things. I was looking at making plaster molds of childrens
feet at the beach or stepping stones for garden or outside. Made with
marbles and all kinds of things. If you need more on this, let me know.
