[Nfb-krafters-korner] Want To Know Wednesday 5/3/17

I would like to know how to make the nots you put together one within the
other to make a rug. I saw one a long time ago. This man told me he cuts and
make each not that nots to the one next to it to make a very dense rug. All
he used was four ply yarn. His rug was a blue rectangle with a white border.
Within the white were pink roses with green stems. Absolutely stunning rug.
No it was not latch hook, but the yarn ends stood straight up similarly.

Hi Ramona, the blind/visually impaired have come a long way since the days
of chair caning, I believe broom making, and piano tuning.
I think that all of these are dying trades today, aren't they?

When I was a kid I went to the School for the Blind and they had us sample
basket weaving, rug weaving and a variety of crafts, but we never learned
knitting and crocheting in that way. There was a house parent who knit and
taught many of us during winter afternoons. My mother sewed a lot, and I
got her to teach me the basics one summer. The home ec teacher limited what
she thought we could do in sewing, so I showed the other girls what I had
figured out with my Mom. Not a good way to get brownie points with the
teacher, but good for my confidence and the other girls, as well.

Since my mother sews and my sister knits, I can pick their brains for ideas.
I get little tips from all kinds of people to try new things. I also
taught my daughter to sew, and she has done things I have not done, but I
now can get ideas from her, too. But sometimes you just have to try it and
may do it wrong to figure out a better way.

I learned where to go for a knitting machine from Becky on this list, and
she has paved the way with the teacher Morgan Hicks. If I ever get time, I
have a lot more to learn.

When I learned rug weaving, it was a very negative commentary on what blind
people could expect for employment, and even though I enjoyed doing it, I
was glad to leave it behind when I graduated. When I was a senior in high
school, my class raised money for our class trip with some of our weaving.
I spent many afternoons after school making rugs and raised quite a bit of
money. Now if I can create space and find a loom at a reasonable price, I
may get one and go back to it. It is a dying art that I actually know quite
a bit about.

Happy Wednesday to everyone.

Today I would like to talk about crafting mentors.

Do you have craft mentors or instructors that inspire you?

Can you think of one or more persons that has given you guidance and
fostered your love of crafting?

What about people you would like to study with or maybe read a book they
have written?

These people can be parents, relatives, teachers, friends or crafting gurus.

As usual I look forward to reading all of your responses.

Nella
