Terry,
I like what you said here! (It took you a few classes, with different teachers)

Keep that in mind everyone. If you are not able to understand what one teacher is explaining, try another!

They may say it in a slightly different way or enunciate one word over another and it will just click!

Happy Crafting!

Cindy Z.

Great job, Ramona!
I am not very good at crochet, either. I can only use a large hook, but a person has to start, somewhere!
Maybe when I retire, I will work on moving down to a smaller hook. The very first scarf I made, I actually sold!
It took me a few classes, with different teachers, with in KK, to catch on.
I still have to look up my stitches, before doing anything. It just is not second nature, like the loom and knitting needles are!
Terry P.

For whatever it is worth, I am not a crochet person. I tend to pull it too tight. But I just finished an oval-shaped rug made with single crochet. It turned outwell enough that I am offering it for sale at our craft fair at our church this weekend. It is 24 by 30 inches, so it took me many hours.
It is very nice yarn, partly alpaka. If I can figure out how to keep it
looser, perhaps I can actually do some more crochet. I almost forgot about
it, but I just gave it to the lady handling the auction last week. Ramona

Cathy, you bring up some very good points.

I've tried to learn how to crochet several times in my life and for whatever reason I just can't get it. So I'm sticking to my looms. I will probably never be a very good loom knitter because I don't like making things that require lots of different stitches or lots of counting. I like what I call mindless knitting; I do it to relax.

I used to love drawing, but my sight finally got bad enough I couldn't do it anymore. Then I got into pottery and loved it.

I wanted to take art class in high school, but the teacher didn't want me in her class due to my low vision. It really hurt my feelings and I didn't try being creative for a while.

In college I took the pottery class and my instructor was very supportive.
I also had a home economics teacher in high school who taught me to sew, so I did that and created some of my own clothing.

Don't laugh, but I used to think of knitting as an old lady hobby. Lol Then I saw everyone was doing it and I wanted something to do with my hands. I couldn't seem to master the knitting needles, so was very excited when I discovered the loom.

I love some of the little projects we learn here like the pony bead things.
They are fun and something different.

Nella

Hi all,

I love the idea of encouraging a newly blinded person to have the confidence to try something new. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to share our own experiences with someone who has "been there, done that."

So, my story is that I was born with low vision so it was my life. I had parents who encouraged by natural desire to be independent. I first became interested in crafts as a teenager when my sister decided to learn how to crochet a blanket. I tried to learn from her, but was not successful at that time. so I tried knitting instead. For whatever reason I was able to master the knit stitch and created a patchwork blanket from small knitted squares.

My personal feeling is that there are a few things that combine to allow someone the ability to learn a new craft. First is the desire to want to learn. That motivation is very important. The second component is having a good teacher. By this, I mean a teacher who is able to communicate how to create the craft with words and encouragement. The third component is physical dexterity. Folks have this to different degrees, so some crafts might be better for one person and other crafts for another. for example, I have tried to make jewelry and have come to the conclusion after giving it a trial period and have decided it is not the craft for me. Those little beads are just too small for me to handle without dropping them. the beading needle is always poking my fingers which I do not like. but some folks don't have these issues and love jewelry making without their sight. Me, I'm a yarnaholic," as we like to say. <<smile> I take crochet, needle knitting and loom knitting classes and am constantly learning more and more about the crafts I love.

I hope that my post has been of encouragement to someone on this list.

Have a great day!!

Cathy F
