Hi, guys, as an answer to this week, I'll send you the following, and Nella, I like the variation and appreciated it being put there because I hadn't thought of that part myself.

I will never forget the time one of the girls in my first-grade class fell down, breaking her leg, putting herself out of action for weeks, and leaving her in bed and lonely. It was one of the most profound ways that I realized how important it was to give back to others.
Nadia and her family were recent immigrants from Russia, and she was, at the time, a relatively new student and my good friend. I'd enjoyed hanging out with her and was shocked and sorry when our teacher, Mrs.
Philips, told us she'd hurt herself. It was not Christmas. As I recall, we were not anywhere near the holidays. But give back we did, all as a class; we gave to a friend that we missed among our number, to someone who really needed some TLC.

The first thing Mrs. Philips had us do was bake for her. We prepared a batch of blueberry muffins, each child in the class helping to measure, combine, and pour the ingredients for the batter and divvy it up among the muffin cups. Mrs. Philips, of course, did the baking.

The crafting came when we decorated the card we made for Nadia. Each person signed it, and then, we festooned it with glitter, stickers, and a lot of other decorations. Now, this card wasn't a professionally designed one. If memory serves me, Mrs. Philips deliberately bought a plain get-well card, and all of us helped her come up with a warm message for the inside of it. Then, each person signed, and many of us took part in the decorating. With lots of children involved, the decorations turned out to be, well, I think a polite word would be exuberant. But we all wanted to help out, and we all knew Nadia liked glitter and things of that kind, so the crafting was done with all the best intentions. When we delivered the muffins and our card to Nadia's home shortly thereafter, her family was appreciative, along with Nadia herself, and we could all see they really were sincerely grateful.

I got involved because I, like my classmates, thought that was so sweet and considerate of Mrs. Philips. I was accepted as an equal, as much as any of the other kids in my class. I sprinkled bits of glitter and snuck tidbits of muffin batter from the bowl like anyone else. And I think that was the most rewarding thing, though my six- or seven-year-old self never realized it. I was a member of the crowd, a kid like the other kids in my class, not left out or called inspiring because I helped with a craft and cooking project.

In the future, I'd love to knit things to either sell or give to organizations to raffle off at events. I might also try the chemo caps and give them to hospitals for the cancer patients under their care. I have never had cancer myself, but I feel that they have enough to worry about: their expenses, arrangements for care, possible pain, their lives being disrupted, the possible loss of their very lives for some people, the effects on their families, everything. The last thing they need is an added worry, their hair. And if I can help them just that little bit by either donating my hair or pursuing chemo caps, I will. It's not much, but I hope it may help.
