Hi,
I’d be interested in a loom knitting class, to learn how to make scarves.
I currently make hats, and love doing it.

I would also be interested in a beginning crochet class. I used to know how
to do it, so I think I could pick it up again.

Good morning, everybody, I hope you all had a marvelous holiday as well.

I have heard that in the past, a very basic how-to-crochet class was taught,
and that's a craft I'd love to learn. Also, I didn't see any spinning
classes, or at least none recently, and that's a craft I'd love to excel at.

Second, I'd say I want to learn sewing, but I already know there is a class
coming up for that, and I plan to sign up for it. I can't wait to start, as
the skills I once had are, alas, rusty, and I anticipate revitalizing them.
My dream is to work up to sewing all kinds of stuff!

So instead, I want to learn lace-making.

When I was in high school, I took a nice stroll through old Ellicott City,
where my family and I once lived before we moved a few miles away into
Baltimore County. On the sidewalk in front of a group of stores, there was a
lady from a local historical society set up to demo bobbin lace. She had
with her several bobbins of thread and all her supplies watched over by a
crowd of passers-by, but she was kind enough to stop in the midst of what
she was doing to show me a few basics. It was harder and easier than I
thought, harder because it was complex and required a delicate touch, easier
because I expected to have far more trouble feeling what I was doing than I
actually did. I never did get around to setting up additional lessons with
her. Years later, I met a woman who was tatting in the knitting club I
joined in college, and again, I was impressed with her skill and the
complexity of her work. However, again, it was something I just didn't get
around to at the time. Since then, I've heard of hairpin lace, crocheted
lace, knitted lace (which I have since tried and loved in spite of some
frustrating moments), and Venetian rose point lace, as well as other kinds
of needle lace, all things, I was assured, that I would try and eventually
hate; I have my doubts as to that and am undeterred.

I love a craft with plenty of intricate detail, one that demands that I
concentrate. Lace-making seems right for me because you can do a lot of cool
and fancy things with it; I've even heard of women who made their own
wedding and evening dresses, have given spectacular tablecloths to friends,
and whose bedspreads are still family legends.
That is something I wish to do. I want to master those skills and get that
good at it. Not for bragging rights, not even for money, but because I love
the antiquity of lace-making and thrive on the challenge of the skill I
need. My desire to sew comes partly from the drive to master skills but also
out of sheer aggravation: I am simply unable to easily find clothing in
shops that fits without tailoring it, so I figure I might as well just darn
well make my own and have done with it, but lace-making is another story. I
wish to learn it because of how much mental and physical dexterity it seems
to ask of its crafters and because you can express a lot with it, make
things that friends treasure, and be part of something that is very old and
took a lot of work to perfect. I'd love to learn any type there is out
there.

Sorry, everyone, for the ramble, and thank you for putting up with these
long emails.

Amy
