There are a lot of red apples out there.  There are probably some new
hybrids that are a good fit for your area.

Oh, by the way, I was in MS when I enjoyed those Arkansas Blacks.  Yum! Yum!

I've only ever seen them around here, that's neat that you've had them
before.  I thought about planting one of the trees, but they get huge.  So
far I've planted a Honey Crisp and a Granny Smith tree.  I planted dwarf
trees, so want to stick with those.  A huge tree would put too much shade on
my little guys.

I'm looking for some type of red apple to plant.  I don't like Red
Delicious, so need to find something else.  I would appreciate any red apple
suggestions.

Cindy this sounds like a wonderful event.

I bet I could make myself sick trying all the different varieties of apples.
I love apples and enjoy trying new flavors.

I think my favorite is the Honey Crisp; it is sweet and crunchy.

I really like a Wine Sap for cooking, but have a hard time finding them.  So
I usually resort to the Granny smith for pies and such.

I love learning what apple varieties grow in different parts of our country.
We have a local kind here called the Arkansas Black.  It is a very dark
reddish purple, almost black.  It was developed as a long term storing
apple.  People could store them in a root cellar and they would keep most of
the winter as long as they didn't freeze.  I'm actually not that crazy about
their taste, but they look interesting.

I want everyone to know that Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Nebraska has
wonderful apple orchards where you can come and pick apples and pay for them
by the bag.  There are suck a large variety of apples to try and choose
from.  This is where I have tried so many different brands.  You purchase a
bag, then go out into the fields and pick and fill your bag.  You eat some,
try them, put a fresh one in your bag.  Pick another, try it, possibly put
another in your bag.  Move from tree to tree trying all the different bands
of apples. Come home with your bag overflowing with apples, all for one
price!

This week starting Sept. 15-17 is what they call Applejack Festival.  There
will be vendors and all the apples you can eat.  If you are near Nebraska
City, come and have some fun and enjoy apple muffins, applesauce, apple
cider or my favorite a fresh apple off the tree.  Learn the history of Arbor
Day and J. Sterling Morton while you are there.
