Dixie:

Apple head dolls have always given me the creeps. I think it is there
wrinkly little faces. They are to creepy to live in my house. Lol

I know I'm strange and I'm sure all of you know it by now.

Apple Head Dolls

Peel a large apple.

Make a couple small horizontal cuts just a little bit above half way down
the apple to make the eye slits.

Cut away a little bit of apple on either side of the nose, and just below
the nose.

Make another slit for the mouth, this should be about three quarters of the
way to the bottom of the apple.

Dip your carved apple in lemon juice, and then generously salt it.

You can also slip apple seeds into the eye sockets or else black beads.

Now Bend a large paperclip open, Insert the paperclip through the core from
top to bottom, bend the bottom to keep it from slipping back out, and then
shape the top of the paper clip into a hook.

Hang your apple head in a well ventilated area out of direct sunlight for
approximately 3 weeks, plus or minus.

Your apple head will shrivel into an old wrinkly face.

When it has dried give it a coat of shellac or varnish.

Now you can use this head to make your doll.

Decorate your apple head with some doll hair, or even use a cotton ball to
make white hair, add a hat, or bonnet, give it a body and dress it up like
an old granny or farmer.

For the body you can shape a stick figure out of bent wire clothes hangers,
then wrap the hangers with straps of muslin to give it some softness.

You can carve pieces of apple to make the hands, drying them in the same way
you dried the apple head.

Then dress the wire body with a calico prairie dress, or farmer jeans.
Once you have the body all dressed place the apple head by sticking your
apple head onto the neck of your wire body.

Note:

You may want to carve a few apples for this project as you never know what
they will end up looking like after they shrink.

These also are cute when decorated as Mr. and Mrs. Claus

Be sure to give him a little extra padding around the middle.

Dress him in a Santa suit, and her in a Christmas print calico dress.

Use cotton balls to make their hair, and his whiskers.
