Well  going back a ways, [for me a long ways back], this might not be a
guys' thing...

At Wedding showers & Baby showers they would take paper plates and poke
holes in it and feed the ribbon & bows thru the plates for [what I am not
sure for], but maybe a momentum of the shower.  It is better then tossing
them in the garbage.
