Good Morning Everyone, I have both the J shaped and Gull Wing Cable needles. 
the Gull Wing needle has the V shape in the middle of it.

My cable needle is shaped like a little candy cane.  I can almost taste the 
peppermint.  I'm not sure which of the ones Annette describes is mine, 
though.  I didn't know there were other kinds.

I have seen 2 other shaped cable needles, which are not my preferred ones to 
use.  One style is a straight needle with a bend in the needle that is 
rounded like a half circle.  The other is again straight with ridges in the 
middle and made of wood.  These both have points at either end to allow the 
stitches to be slipped on to the needle, and worked off of the other end. 
The "V" or "j" shaped needles are my favorite.

Hi Cathie,
, a cable needle is shaped like a print j, with one side being longer than 
the other. You slip stitiches on the short side, and knit off the other side 
after knitting one or more stitches off of the main needle. You hold the 
cable in front or back of your work to make the cable slant to the left or 
right. I'm sure whomever is teaching the class will give a description and 
how it works into the piece. To me a stitch holder looks like a giant safety 
pin. You put stitches on one while you do work on another part of your 
project.
