[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Cable cast-on for knitting

Hi Henry.
My trouble with the long-tail cast-on is getting the length right-ish. I
have to do it at least a couple times to get enough and not waste a long bit
of yarn. The best I've figured to do is wrap the yarn around the needle as
many times as I will want stitches, then hold the yarn where the wraps
finish, unwrap, tie my slip knot where I'm holding, and cast on. But the
more stitches to cast on, the more of a pain it is.
Cable cast-on doesn't have any of those problems, so now I think I will use
it and invisible cast-on for my 2 methods.
Invisible cast-on is where you want to have live stitches on both sides,
like the toe of a sock or the shoulder of a top, so you can work out from
both sides and not have a sewn seam.

I like this method of casting on too, it makes a nice straight edge. I still

can't get the hang of the Long Tailed Cast On, I wouldn't mind a class or
even a Monday night chat on this after the holidays.

I love the knit cast on!

Start with a slip knot, Knit a stitch, but do not take the stitch off the
left needle. While the stitch is half on the left needle and half on the
right, slide the loop from the right needle back to the left needle.
You have made a new stitch!
Repeat using the loop closest to the tip of your needle.

I just learned the cable cast-on, and I'm really liking it. It's not real
stretchy, so I have to be careful not to pull the stitches tight as I'm
casting on, but it's a lot easier than the long-tail cast-on, which I've
been using for ages. Now cable cast-on is my go-to.

What you do is:

Tie a slip knot a few inches from the end of the yarn, and put the loop over
the needle.

Twist the yarn once to create another loop, and slip that on the needle.
Don't pull the loop tight.

*Stick the other needle between the 2 loops. The left needle, with the
loops, is pointing straight up, and the right needle is between the 2 loops
and pointing straight away from me.

Wrap the yarn around the right needle, on the back side away from you,
coming up from under the needle and around. Then pull that loop through,
between the 2 loops on the left needle, and put it on the left needle. Do
not pull it tight, but you can adjust it a little to tighten the loop below
it.

Repeat from the *.

It took a few tries to be able to pull the yarn through between the 2 loops,
and at first I did it with a crochet hook, but then I got the hang of it and
now it goes easily.
