[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Crochet pattern question

Can someone interpret this for me?  I think it's missing a set of
parentheses, maybe.

Step1:  Create a ring of 4 chain stitches.  Fine, got that.

Then:

"Ch6 (this will count as your first dc, ch3), dc in ring, ch3 (9 times),
attach with sl st to 3rd ch at beginning."

I don't think it means to chain 3 9 times.  What am I supposed to do 9
times?  This is going to turn out to be a star, after several more steps.
