Why not cross under the belly and bring to the other side and through eyelet holes, on each side, to be tied at the top.
You would need long straps, but it would solve the dangle problem!

Hi Everyone, I've seen some dog sweater patterns that are knitted. I suppose that they could be adapted to crochet,. I like the idea of a strap and button to secure the sweater under the belly. Velcro could also work, but, that tends to wear out in time.
My previous dog had a sweater made out of crocheted Granny Squares, but, it was too small for Miss you know who now.
You've all got me thinking!

Yeah, that sounds right.  But I'm thinking that tying under the belly would leave strings hanging down, getting muddy and all, so that's why I was thinking about tying on the back.  Which necessitates a piece coming between the front legs, which your design doesn't require.  My idea is based on Krokus's raincoat, but would take more work than your idea.  Hmmm.

I have thought about making one and thought about making a flat piece for the back and sides of the body, with a strap or eye chord to tie or Velcro, under the belly.
Sophie's rain coat is like this, accept it does have a hood!

I have been thinking a dog sweater might be a good item to make and donate to a dog-related charity auction, but I haven't found a pattern I like.
I have read about a dog sweater that fits over a guide dog's harness, and that is interesting, too.
The thing I'm not sure about is size.  It seems like making a sweater for a big dog like my lab would take a lot of time and yarn, and I'm not sure about sizes for smaller dogs.
I'm thinking of a pattern idea for a sweater that covered the back and sides, with a kind of bib that goes between the front legs, with a belt to fasten it around the back, either long enough to tie in a bow, or with buttons.
What do those of you who have actually made dog sweaters think?  Or am I over-thinking this?

I have needle knitted  a few dog sweaters.  My son in the past has had an Italian Greyhound and with their necks being a bit long and their  being skinney I made up my own pattern using Knit 2 Purl 2.  Of course it had a turtle neck and I measured it while I was knitting it.  I binded off like you do for thumb holes in mittens for his legs to go thru.  I did this in a circle and brought it onto the tummy beinding off half the stitches and just went back and forth in Knit 2 Purl 2 across the back justabout to the tail.
