I used to do a lot of counted cross stitch in my sighted days. My particular
favorites included antique sampler reproductions. The samplers were ways for
young girls to learn their alphabets along with practicing the skills needed
to sew their wedding linens. Occasionally one will find a sampler that was
done by a boy. When the boy had been confined for reasons like illness he
would be given tasks that could be done from the confines of his bed. One of
these tasks would be learning his alphabet by making a sampler. Samplers
also illustrated family lineage or could be done in memorial of a deceased
family member. Samplers could have all kinds of motifs, pictures, scripts,
and embroidery techniques. One could often tell what school a girl went to
by the motifs found in her samplers. One of the most interesting girl's
names I found in an antique sampler was "Freelove Hazzard." Makes one think,
