[Nfb-krafters-korner] Socks

Cathy,

I personally have used Cascade Fixation (used to use a knitpicks brand but it is now discontinued) and it is cotton with a little bit of elastic. These have never shrank and I use a tight tension compared to most people (can get away with using US 3 because my tension is tight). The elasticity of these socks are wonderful and making your own you can customize them to your feet. I wash and dry these in the machine. My calves are rather large (I compensate for this in whatever pattern I am using on the leg to add girth) the socks come off at night and look totally stretched out and come back out of the dryer looking perfect. My handmade socks are the only ones that do not leave indentations in my legs and I have the freedom to make them as tall or short as I want.

Typically, I use my own pattern of plain stockinette toe up until I reach the leg. At the leg, I do whatever pattern comes to mind or adapt one to my stitch count and leg increases. My true shoe size is 6 4E so sock patterns on the top of the foot do not usually fit unless I have just made them up. Once you have done a couple of pair to get the hang of what makes up a sock, you can try all different types of heals, toes, gusset, and legs. You will totally be hooked once you find the right combination that fits your foot the best.

Cindy

Hi Tracy,

I would be interested in this type of class. I have made booties but never socks. I haven’t been confident that I could work with sock weight yarn. But I am usually up for a challenge and especially something involving yarn. I was wondering however about whether your pattern adjusts to the fact that cotton is going to shrink? I have had dishcloths I made from cotton yarn shrink into rectangular shapes that were originally square. a cotton blend might work better, have you tried something in a blend? I would not like a wool blend, but I am sure there is some kind of sock yarn out there that wold work.

With so many at convention, you may not hear back from others for a few days. I am sure there will be others interestedin your class besides me.

Looking forward to making socks.

Have a wonderful day!

Cathy F
