Sharon,
Something being cheesy is an idiom.  It means that the duct tape could make the purse look silly or not give it a nice finish like you would want it to be.  I understand your idea about using clear duct tape to protect the purse, but this probably would not be the best way to keep the bag safe.  

I think if we understood what the bag was made out of, then we might be able to help give you helpful ideas of ways to preserve the bag.

What do you mean by tape being cheesy?  Is it possible for the duct tape to sort of melt and slide off?
