Annette,
I enjoyed reading your email. Very good food for thought.

Subject: Re: [Nfb-krafters-korner] Election question

Hello,

I have a philosophy on how to address the situation where someone or "the
only" person standing up as a candidate to an NFB office of any type has
limited skills in the tasks of the position, with possibly the president's
position falling into this category on a limited scale. In my mind, the
goal of the NFB is to give its members the chance to grow and become more
confident in "living the life they want to live". A person needs experience
to do this. What better way to grow than in a safe environment with a
supportive family guiding and encouraging you. Now with this said, I am not
saying that the person does not have to possess any qualities that make them
a good candidate for a position. Here are 8 qualities of a great leader put
out by Forbes.

1. True enthusiasm
2. Integrity
3. Great communication skills
4. Loyalty
5. Decisiveness
6. Managerial competence
7. Empowerment
8. Charisma

It is my personal opinion that characteristics 3, 5 & 6 are opportunities
for mentoring, but the person has to want to develop these skills and have
some type of evidence that they have the potential. If you want to read
more about each of the 8 leadership characteristics, visit URL:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/kimberlyfries/2018/02/08/8-essential-qualities-
that-define-great-leadership/#307d61043b63

There are plenty of other lists of characteristics of a good leader. This
was one of the shortest and from a reputable source.

The other important piece of having a great leadership team is mentoring
from the top down. A president should be mentored and receive guidance from
the state affiliate or national office leadership. The vice president
should be mentored and guidance by the president, and so on. The person who
previously held the position is also a great mentoring resource. Learning
how to mentor is a great skill to have. The purpose of providing this type
of support is to teach that person how to perform the tasks of the position,
and leading by example

When it comes to the membership voting for a candidate, each of us must
determine what characteristics are important to us that make for a great
leader. With all of that said, if a candidate has the skills, knowledge and
talents to perform the tasks of the position, it is a bonus. Remember, if
you think you can do a better job, step up.

Just my 2 cents.
Annette

Holding a board position is a leadership opportunity. In general terms what
does it take to be a leader.

Subject: [Nfb-krafters-korner] Election question

I am very curious about this election and wanted to place it out on list. I
do believe there are those on list that have faced this question before and
wanted to know how it was solved. I had the similar situation at a chapter
election. Hope someone will know. If there is no one who will step forward
to run for office for does not have the knowledge or experience for the
position and the operating board can not be filledwhat happens? If there is
not a certain number on the board who makes the decisions for the group? I
know there has to be an answer somewhere. Does the NFB take over for a time,
I am unsettled about this directions, sure there is a answer somewhere.
Thanks.

Terry K
