As a Hadley learner, you know Hadley helps people around the world who are
blind and visually impaired. Here is Jody's story:

Jody's vision loss started when she was an infant.

Born in the decade after World War II, Jody was one of a generation of
premature babies who lost some of their sight as a result of receiving too
much oxygen in their incubators.

"My parents did not want anyone to know I couldn't see well," said Jody. "To
the public, blindness is synonymous with helplessness, hopelessness, and
incompetence. It's understandable that parents have fears and may not know
how to react when facing their child's blindness for the first time."

Every day was a struggle for Jody.

"When you are trying to 'pass,' the stress is unimaginable," Jody said. "I
was always afraid someone would find out my secret. Will there be stairs?
Will someone hand me something that I don't see?"

After high school, Jody hit a devastating road block.

The impact of not addressing her needs came to a head when Jody left the
safety of her hometown. "I graduated high school with a second grade reading
speed. I went to college only to find I was not able to complete
college-level work."

Soon after moving back home, Jody met her husband, they had two children,
and she focused on their life together. She always wanted to continue her
education, but the scars from years of painful memories still haunted her.
"It took time for me to recover, but once I accepted who I was, I resented
people who acted as if I should 'pass' in the first place."

Jody was determined to learn braille.

Forty years after attempting to go to college, Jody turned to Hadley.
"Everyone at Hadley helped me, and now I am so proud to say I am a braille
reader. I can't help but get emotional about it. I can read and write like
never before." Jody just needed the right people to stand by her, encourage
her, and teach her.

"What donor support provides Hadley students is priceless! It's never too
late to learn."

Through your contributions, you help people in the U.S. and around the world
who face struggles similar to Jody's engage with Hadley and their fellow
learners, free of charge, in the comfort of their homes.

As a Hadley learner, you know first-hand the impact that Hadley has on an
individual's life. Your contribution before the end of the year will help
Jody, and so many others, to thrive at home, at work and in their
communities.

Your gift of any amount is especially meaningful to those who will turn to
Hadley for help in the coming year. Thank you for your considering a gift
this holiday season!
