Cindy, I wrote to Tammy about a class in October. Is that too early?

Thanks, Ramona. I hope to be able to get the machine out in November and
start learning how it works.

For those who want a basic sewing class, I recommend you start with some
plain cotton scrap fabric cut into squares or rectangles. Fold it in half
and sew along the fold using the presser foot or the seam guide to keep it
straight. Then try some hems with a tiny turn under, then a little larger
one. Pin the hem in or baste it. Most people don't like to baste, but you
can make huge stitches if you are nervous about removing the pins as you go.
If your machine is working well and threaded correctly, you should be able
to feel the stitching line behind the presser foot and after the seam or hem
is finished. Be careful always to know where your hands are in relation to
the needle. Keep your fingers flat on the machine surface, don't let them
fly up in the air. A needle in the finger is not pleasant, but you will
live through it, but best to keep your fingers away while machine is
running. It is safe for your fingers to be at the front of the presser
foot. Some are very narrow on one side or the other, and a zipper foot may
not have any protection on one side.

Once you have done those two things, let me know what you want next. If you
have trouble, email or call me. Don't worry about questions. I can't
anticipate all of them.

I would like a basic sewing class. We are not going to talk about how long
it has been since I used a machine in middle school as a sighted person.

Donnie,

You have sparked enough interest here regarding sewing machines. It has
been mentioned that we have ahd sewing classes mostly beginners class, but
what you seem to be asking sounds more then a beginner's class with reducing
down the original size, adding a zipper and these other things mentioned.

If you are interested in a beginner's sewing class I can or I'm willing to
teach something basic. If you want something a bit advanced, but in line of
quilting/ piecing, I can do a class like that. If you have a project with
the particular things you mentioned I would offer you one on one, but you do
need to be a member of the division.

Please do let me know if others are interested in the above classes and let
me know what you are interested in doing with a sewing machine. I will plan
ahead for the Fall or Winter. I need to here from each person who is
interested. Send me your project wishes and how experienced you are with a
sewing machine and if you have one or have the use of one.

I just covered with lectures on Monday Night Chats about sewing machines,
Accuquilt and dies, quilting machines and embroidery machines from my
experience and use of them.

I have done sewing classes here at Krafters Korner from options of hand
sewing to doing it by machine. I have done some basic and advanced
quilting.piecing classes here, too.

Subject: [NFB-Krafters-Korner] Sewing Machines?

Hi, Everyone.
I'm coming out of lurkdom to ask if it's possible to learn to use a sewing
machine beyond just sewing straight seams. I have a seam guide and access to
a surger and an industrial strength sewing machine--my Mom used to sew out
of her home and has four or five different machines that she might let me
use if I could help her be comfortable with the idea, and could get help
learning how to use them. I need too decrease the size of a bed encasement,
which would mean taking it apart and cutting the fabric down to fit my
matress, then sewing it up again, including a zipper and Velcro closures.
The concept seems easy enough to do aside from the zipper learning curve.
What are your thoughts?

I know I could probably bring it to Mom and get her to do it, but I want to
be able to work with the machines and materials and concepts myself and
manage my own sewing project needs. I've always wanted to learn to sew, but
there's no local resource. My local VR center has a manual arts/woodworking
class, but no sewing class. And I don't want to have to enroll in the whole
program just to be able to take a sewing class.

Mom is in her seventies, and I want her to be around for a looong time yet,
but have to think about that she might not be for some unforeseen reason. I
want to learn to sew to keep her with me after she's gone.

Thanks,
Dani
