[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Learning to knit

Hi Ari, good luck on your new venture and adventure of knitting.
I agree with Tracy in that you are on the right track with your supplies.
Tracy, you have the Iowa scissors, Terry and I have several pairs, and she
trys to get more each time she goes to convention.
We have the point protecters. I use the elastic hair ties to keep the
needles together and to keep the project from falling off of the needles.
these hair ties can be bought at Walmarts or probably most grocery stores.

Hi Ari.
Sounds like you're back on the knitting road!
I also re-took up knitting after a very long break. I read the Stitch 'n
Bitch book, but I also found it confusing. What worked best for me was
getting a short lesson at my local yarn store, so I think you're on the
right track getting hooked up with a knitting group. I'm sure someone will
help you, and then your hands will start remembering what to do.
I started knitting again a few years ago now, and I've become quite a good
knitter, if I say so myself.

Your needle labelling trick sounds good.
I have a needle sizer. I put little braille labels on it, and it's pretty
useful. The tiny sizes like 0-2 are too close together to label, but the
others were OK. I put a strip of braille label across the bottom, listing
the holes above the label in order, for 4-9, or whatever that row is, and
then little labels next to the other big holes.
I use the paper labels that come in the braille copy of Braille Book Review.
They stay stuck on better than dymo-tape labels.

I strongly prefer circular needles to straight. To me, straights are long
and awkward. And, when I'm ready to stop for a while, I push my knitting
down onto the cable, well away from the points, so it doesn't fall off.

I have 2 pairs of scissors I can use for knitting and other crafts. My
favorite is a short pair of scissors with a leather cover. My mom gave it
to me, and she attached a pretty bit of stuffed cross-stitch with a lovely
pattern of garden vegetables.
I also have a pair of folding scissors I can throw in my bag when I want. I
bought them at national convention quite a while ago, from Iowa, I think.
Or maybe Ohio, but I think Iowa. They're great. They fold up small, but
open up into a nice pair of sewing scissors.

Good luck with your knitting adventures!
Tracy

Hello, everyone! Wow! It's been so darn long since I've written in this
thread! :) Good pun. Anyhow, I've been checking out some knitting books from
BARD: Knitting in Plain English, by Maggie Righetti
Stitch 'n Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook, by Debbie Stoller
Knitting Without Tears: Basic Techniques and Easy-to-Follow Directions for
Garments to Fit All Sizes, by Elizabeth Zimmermann
How to Knit Socks that Fit: Techniques for Toe-Up and Cuff-Down Styles, by
Donna Druchunas
Knitgrrl: Learn to Knit with 15 Fun and Funky Projects, by Shannon Okey

The last three are more for when I actually get the hang of things--I'm
actually finding written directions mostly confusing, rather than helpful.
:( Anyhow, I think I may have found a useful set of articles on knitting on
thesprucecrafts.com, by Sarah E. White.
https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/learn-to-knit-2116465
The good news, though (I hope), is that there's a knitting group thingie at
my local senior center. I'm hoping they welcome young people like me. I
really think working with someone in person would really help. I think I
just need someone to sort of do it with me hand-over-hand, so they can
correct me if I'm wrong, or give me pointers or something. I'm really hoping
this works out. Google Maps seems to think I can't get there by bus when I
need to, but Paratransit runs then, so I know I can get there. Anyhow, I'm
hoping I can progress to getting started with this instead of looking sadly
at my poor, neglected yarn and needles in their handy Dyson tools bag. Yes,
I got sent an extra bag when I got my vacuum, and it's rather quite nice and
sturdy; it does the job for now.

I actually do have some questions. I have size 11 needles--I wanted to use a
chunkier yarn, and got some bulky or super bulky--I can't remember now. I
think i got it at Michaels. Anyhow, I liked the texture and color, so I got
it. It was also buy one get one 50% off, so that was a very cool bonus.

Anyhow, I was wondering about point protectors. What's out there? What do
people like? I remember when I was first knitting, years ago, that I
sometimes had my work slip off the needles when I transported it; I wish I
knew about point protectors then.

How about measuring gage? And figuring out what size needles you have? I'll
probably just rubber band each pare together and put a hole-punched Braille
label on the band with the size and brand and any other information, but I
wonder how easy these needle size measurement thingies are to use by someone
who's totally blind.

Okay, so here's another weird question--scissers. What do people use? WILL
any small pare do? I think I want to use something with a cover for the
blades; I have a little pare I got some time ago that have blades about 2-3
inches long, with a little shieth that snaps on over the blades. That pare
has since been relegated to cleaning the vacuum brush bar.

Does anyone think I need anything else?

Thanks for putting up with my spiratic emails and complaining--and endless
questions lol.

Thanks,
Ari
