I don't like the duct tape idea at all. It would look very tacky as someone 
already said.

I disagree with you a bit.
First of all, it needs to be warshable  so cotton would be my choice.
It’s the handle that needs to be strong!
It is connecting to the chair or table and holding the weight!

Good idea!  I have some jewt that needs a purpose.  I may try playing
with it and see what I can come up with.   I wouldn't want to use a
soft yarn with stretch.
