Find a church knitting group or senior center.  Maybe even girl scouts.  It is a lot easier to teach a beginner on straight needles and then move to circular needles.

I'd happily give away a whole pile of straight knitting needles.  I never use them.  Don't know how to find someone who wants them, though.
