Hi Tracy, thanks for sharing these shell stitches with us. May I please 
borrow them for a maybe some day afghan or throw?

The crochet shell stitch I know is similar, but, instead of 5 double
crochets, you do a half-double, double, triple, double and half-double, so
the stitches go up then down.
