Just as an addition to the great ideas already given, BlindMice has at least
one book of crochet stitches, and NLS also has books on different crochet
patterns.  And, for that matter, I've found plenty of free stuff on the
internet.

The crochet shell stitch I know is similar, but, instead of 5 double
crochets, you do a half-double, double, triple, double and half-double, so
the stitches go up then down.
