The problem is that the stitches were on a holder till the rest of the mitten was complete.
FOr some reason I keep messing up here. I like the pattern, but am tired of this problem occuring each time.
Any tips for future attempts? The stitches are always messy at the thumb. The pattern has a flap as well and I have no issues there.

This involves finding the loop you dropped, then using a crochet hook to pull the closest un-knitted, ladder stitch through the loop, then the laddered stitch becomes the loop, and you repeat with the next ladder. It's hard to explain in an email. And you have to make the new loop bumps come out on the same side as all your other bumps.

Mittens are pretty small, so backing up wouldn't be a big deal. But backing up through a row where you've knit some stitches together can be very tricky.
