[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Threading sewing machine

Joyce, or anyone, do you use a special needle threader to thread the sewing machine needle? I have the wire ones that come 3 to a pack, or something like that. I've also seen sturdier ones that are all one piece, with a hole for the thread. Is one better than the other for the sewing machine?

As far as threading the needle of a sewing machine that totally depends on which sewing machine you have. Some machines you thread front to back and others you thread right to left.

Not sure what is meant by knot in bobbin thread? Now a day you just back tack which is take a couple of stitches forward and then hit your reverse leve/button r& take a couple of stitches backward and then go ahead until the end and do the same to tack the thread down.

No more with wasting time by pulling thread to the back and tying a knot

Hey... 2 more questions!

On the sewing machine, does the thread for from front to back through the eye, or back to front.

What kind of knot do you use on the bobbin to start it?

Of course, you hold the other end while you thread it. Self threading needles often are fine for hand sewing. The needle on the sewing machine should always be in the same position, but if you forget which way the eye is, you should be able to find the big side with your fingernail. Of course the traditional needle threader must be put in from the opposite side.

If you guess the wrong way first, it will never stop. Sometimes if you take the paper off the end of the spool, you will find the end, but you cannot count on that. If they're not too busy, I have actually asked someone in the store where I buy thread to get the end out. Often people in fabric stores can do this very quickly if they sew. If you buy it at walMart, less likely.

A shoebox or sewing machine cabinet drawer can hold quite a few spools. Most spools are hollow plastic tubes these days, but spool still seems to be the right name. Write the color in Braille on dynotape or old computer labels and put it inside these squares. Sighted people won't like it, especially if the papers are off the ends of the spools, but you can read the Braille just fine—upside down may be the best. Your fingers are pointing down.
