FUNNY CROCHET SLANG TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS TRANSLATED
March 18, 2020 by Nicole Riley Leave a Comment
This list provides a translation to slang crochet terms some
crocheters may have never heard before, but should. Be a part of the
club and know what everyone is talking about.
You just started to crochet or you finally started to join crochet
groups, forums or clubs. But there is one small issue. They all seem
to be talking in a different language. Crochet patterns already have a
lot of abbreviations, but now crocheters also talk in such a different
way that makes you feel lost. Well, that finally ends now. Let me be
the dictionary and solution to your confusion with slang crochet
terms.

Finally, learn what “frogging”, “WIP” and “CAL” mean. This will be
your go-to resource for all of them. Bookmark it, share it, pin it.
Just have it handy when someone mentions slang crochet terms that you
never heard. It’s like watching and reading crochet memes. You gotta
understand them to laugh 🙂

SLANG CROCHET TERMS TRANSLATED
WHAT DOES FROG OR FROGGING MEAN?
Frogging is derived from “ripping out” which sounds like a frog sound,
and means that you have to pull out your already made stitches and
undo your work. Typically you would do that when you have made a
mistake or don’t like your project and want to redo it and reuse the
yarn. You might frog just a few stitches, or a row or the entire
project.

WHAT DOES WIP MEAN?
WIP stands for “work in progress” and means that you are currently
working on a project, whether it’s crochet, knit or anything else.
However, it’s well known in the craft and crochet community, not so
much in the actual workforce. Although it should, shouldn’t it?

WHAT DOES CAL MEAN?
CAL is short for “Crochet Along” which is an event where a designer
creates and releases a known pattern in parts and a huge community all
work on it at the same time. That is typically done in a Facebook
Group, a forum or just through a newsletter. Some designers, like
myself, even like to crochet Mystery CALs where the end product is not
known, but the material list is.

WHAT DOES KAL MEAN?
KAL is the “sister” or “brother” of CAL. It means Knit Along which is
the same process and event as a CAL, just for knitters with a knit
pattern.

WHAT DOES C2C STAND FOR?
It simply means Corner to Corner and is a special crochet technique
made in little pixels all connected to each other to create a picture
made from a graphgan.

WHAT IS LYS?
LYS means “local yarn store”. It typically refers to a small business
with high end and luxurious yarn that may have been hand-dyed. But
some yarnies now also include big brands such as Michaels, Joann and
Hobby Lobby.

WHAT DOES CROJO MEAN?
CROJO is derived from “mojo” and means you are motivated about
something. CROJO then means you are motivated to crochet.

WHAT DOES NCR STAND FOR?
NCR means “not crochet related” which some crocheters use in groups
when they have a personal question that is not crochet related. Not
every group allows NCRs tho.

WHAT DOES PHD STAND FOR?
PHD means “project half done” which sadly means you will not get a
higher education degree when you crochet your projects. LOL

WHAT DOES FO MEAN?
That is what actually what you have when you don’t have a WIP or PHD
anymore. It means “finished object”

WHAT DOES UFO MEAN THEN?
Well, you will not have aliens appear when crocheting unless you are
dehydrated and are hallucinating. LOL Well, UFO means “unfinished
object” and is basically the same as a WIP. But typically you haven’t
touched your UFO in a while whereas WIPs are the ones you are
currently working on.

WHAT DOES USO STAND FOR?
Well, it’s the position you are in before you have a UFO. It means
“unstarted object”.

WHAT DOES HOTH/FOTH STAND FOR?
They simply mean “hot off the hook” or “fresh off the hook” and you
are very happy you just finished your project and want to show it off
to the world proudly.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF YARN CHICKEN?
Well, some crocheters or knitters win or lose at “yarn chicken” and
that means that they either had just enough yarn to finish their
project or they didn’t have enough and need to get more. It’s like a
game and competition between you and the yarn and no one knows who
will win. The yarn or you.

WHAT DO CIP AND KIP MEAN?
CIP means “crochet in public” and KIP means “knit in public” and
typically this abbreviation is used online when showing off that you
are proudly working on your WIP in public.

WHAT DOES OCD MEAN?
No, it doesn’t mean what you think it does. In this case, it means
“obsessive crocheting disorder”. LOL

WHAT DOES TOAD STAND FOR?
TOAD is almost related to FROG and means “trashed object abandoned in
disgust”. So you pretty much gave up on it completely and will not
even frog it.

WHAT DOES ISO MEAN?
It means ” in search of”. So you are looking for patterns or yarn or
related things.

WHAT DOES YARN BARF MEAN?
Well, it means you tried to pull just a strand of yarn from the middle
of a yarn skein, but were unsuccessful and you pull a “mini skein” out
instead which looks like the yarn skein barfed. LOL

WHO IS A YARNIE?
A yarnie is someone who loves to work with yarn. Typically that is a
crocheter or a knitter.

WHAT DOES PIGS STAND FOR?
This is a fun crochet slang abbreviation. It means “projects in grocery sacks”.

CAN I ASK THIS? WHO IS A HOOKER?
A hooker refers to a crocheter who obviously works with a hook. 🙂

WHAT DOES CLOWN BARF MEAN?
Do you know how clowns are very colorful but not attractive? Well,
clown barf means you tried to create a beautiful variegated yarn
pooling project but it didn’t work out and doesn’t look nice.

WHAT DOES YARN POOLING STAND FOR?
Yarn pooling is a technique where you adjust your tension and use
certain stitches (such as a moss stitch or granny stitch) to create a
geometric color design using variegated yarn without having to use
multiple yarn skeins.

WHAT DOES JAYGO MEAN?
It simply means “join as you go” which is a technique that allows you
to connect crochet pieces without having to sew them together but
instead crochet them together during the project.

WHAT DOES MGBTC STAND FOR?
It means “must get back to crocheting”.

WHAT DOES AMI STAND FOR?
AMI stands for Amigurumi and is pretty much a crocheted stuffed animal.

WHAT DOES STASH MEAN?
STASH refers to the yarn storage you have. Some are really big and
some are small, some are even hidden, hench the word “stash”.

WHAT DOES PABLE STAND FOR?
It means “project accumulated beyond life expectancy” LOL

WHAT DOES BISTITCHUAL STAND FOR?
That is someone who both crochets and knits.

WHAT DOES FS STAND FOR?
FS just means “for sale” and typically means someone is trying to sell
their yarn or finished project.

WHAT DOES YARN BOMB STAND FOR?
It means someone crocheted something and is displaying it in public on
lamps, benches, ground, fences and other places. Check out London Kaye
for some amazing inspiration.

That means “critter and crochet” where crocheters post photos on
social media of their crochet project and their pets.

WHAT DOES YART MEAN?
It means “yarn acquisition road trip”

WHAT DOES WIVSP STAND FOR?
