[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Darn

This is a good idea. I'll have to see if I still have some of the yarn, or
another that's close enough. And I'll keep Bernice's idea in mind, too.

If you knitted these mittens, did you knit the thumb from the bottom of the
thumb up to the tip?

If you did it that way, using 2 circular knitting needles take out tip of
thumb and tear back below hole area. Divide number of stitches in half and
put half on one needle and one on the other needle. If you have more of the
original yarn double yarn and reknit back to the tip. You can decrease
stitches like the original, but not really necessary. What I do is decrease
beginning of each needle and place a knit every stitch on the odd # rows.
When you have like 3 stitches on each needle run the yarn thru the 6
stitches twice and tighten up carefully to create a circular tip. Bring
yarn to inside and stitch an X to secure stitches and tie a knot.

Now you have a double thickness in the thumb area.

I knitted myself some mittens a while back, and now I have a big
problem-there's a sizable hole in the left thumb. It's where I hold my
dog's harness handle and leash, and I think it's rubbed the hole. So now I
have to figure out how to darn it. My sister explained darning to me, but
I'm not good at it. I'm thinking I could pick up the stitches, sort of, by
putting a crochet hook through the stitch holes and crochet in a patch. Or
I could just sew the 2 sides of the hole together, but I don't want to make
the thumb tight. I'd somehow like to reinforce the spot, too, or it will
happen again.

Thoughts?

Tracy
