Freeform.  I decided what I wanted to make, like a horse, maybe drew it a few times with raised lines on paper, made my best guess as to which stitches I should use, then jumped in and tried to make it.

Did you do it, free form or was there a picture.
I have tried 10 count canvas and found it very complicated!  The holes are very hard to feal and it is very easy to make a mistake! It is nice for what I wanted to do, though!

Terry, crewel is embroidering with yarn instead of thread.  The yarn is thin, but not as thin as thread.  And, when I did it, I embroidered on a piece of cotton or linen fabric--no premade holes.

I have been blind since I was a little kid, for whatever that's worth.  When I was a teenager, I did crewel.  I did it "freehand", making up my own patterns.  I thought they came out nice.  Maybe, in my retirement, I'll try it again.

Sometimes, it annoys me that I can't independently use some patterns, but on the other hand it pushes me to be creative and come up with my own.

If you remember the stitches and have an idea in mind, why not give it a try?  If it works out, great!  If it doesn't, you may be able to figure out what went wrong.  Either way, what have you got to lose?

So is hand embroidery too visual you think?
What is it like doing it on a machine?
