[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Getting gauge in crochet

I'm having a heck of a time getting gauge in crochet for my rectangles. I
did a few rows yesterday and saw I was a half inch too wide, so I took out 3
stitches, 1 repeat, and then I was a half inch too narrow. Gack. Is it
kosher to work it an inch too narrow, then add a row of single crochet along
the side to make it big enough? Or would that be weird?

I'd love any hints about how to get the right gauge without pulling out the
thing several times. My best yarn is fuzzy, and doesn't pull out easily.
