Ari;
If your cast on stitches are to tight, use a larger needle for the cast on.
Go up one size from what your patern calls for and see if that helps!
Your tention will improve with practice.  Many knit loosely and many knit tightly!
If size matters, like on a sweater, they suggest you make a swatch,, or trial piece, to see how many stitches you are getting, per inch.

Oh, I know what you mean. I'm getting major cabbin fever! I would welcome a class like this. I've been working with someone off-list, but some more help couldn't hurt. :) My needles are probably going to start a revolt against my yarn for trying to kill them. :) I'm having major issues not getting my knit cast-on too tight. I'm working on it, though, and I hope it'll get better in time.
