Linda, yes when you make the x'x you hog up a lot of yarn. You got some
great advice about using another color or if variegated, the color should be
one in the variations of color. Red is super hard to match, but most if you
are close or a good contrast like someone said with the black added to the
red sweater you are good.

Becky, I ran out of yarn before I reached the shoulders.  Yarn is
discontinued.  I guess I won't be completing the sweater this time.  I am
looking for another pattern which requires less yarn.
