[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Dues

It really bugs me when people try to lay the trip on me that blind people should be grateful for whatever we can get, even when I hear it from people I know to be of good will. I've had a bellyful of it from organizations who use it as an excuse to be patronizing, disrespectful, and sloppy, or from blind people excusing those attitudes. I'm happy to appreciate and pay for good service, and to appreciate someone who helps me, but not because I'm just a poor little blind girl.
Nor am I saying blind people should get everything for free. I just think dues should be reasonable for what members get, and I am concerned that keeping and increasing membership could be made harder by charging high dues. It's not a problem for me, but I know it can be for others.

I had no idea some teachers were paid. I've taught a couple classes, and the subject never came up. I'm just an enthusiastic volunteer, sharing what I know. Huh.

The other things like web admin are handled differently by different divisions, and I have no comment.
It is good to know what dues are being used for, whether I think all those uses are good or not.

Hi all,

I think a bit of history is worth sharing here. For a few years we had a web administrator for our website who we paid to keep our site up to date. Our dues which were $10 at the time was unable to pay for all of the work needed to cover these expenses. So we raised the dues. Also around that time we were paying to have some advertising of our group on other websites for the blind and visually impaired.

At present I am volunteering my time to administrate the site. However, I don’t know how much longer I will be able to handle this job. So, having money available to hire a website administrator may become necessary at some time in the future. Also, we are not paying for advertising anywhere at present, however this is something that may wish to be done again in the future.

On a personal note, I just canot understand why some of you are not simply grateful beyond belief to be able to pay for classes adaptive for the blind for only $20 per year. This is something that no other division offers, and I am more than happy to contribute financially and through teaching to keep this valuable resource available to myself and other blind persons. Are teachers requesting payment for their time and effort? May bethey should, simply to reflect the value they add to the uniqueness of this division.

Don’t be one of those blind folks who wants everything for nothing. This is not what the NFB wants for us.

May God bless you.
