Hi Sandra.
What you describe sounds like darning.  I've tried darning socks, but I wasn't very successful.  
I'm trying to find the web patch Renee described, which sounds like darning made easy.

Hello Tracey,
I have sorted out tiny wholes by stitching the edges together,
creating a type of crease. The only way I know of fixing a whole
without anyone being able to tell, is to get thread of identical fiber
type and colour, create a latis, if you will, connected to the
undamaged fabric. Do you see what I mean? You make a bridge, thread by
thread by thread by thread, until you have a new patch of fabric.
Count me in for a class on this. I've heard of the decorative style,
I'm not sure how you spell it but it sounds a bit like borrow only it
isn't borrowing, as such. Some of it comes from Japanese art.
