Hi Dixie.
I enjoy knitting socks.  
The heel flap is in the back of the sock from the heel up about 2-3 inches.
The gusset is the widening that connects the heel to the top of the foot,
and goes around the ankle.  If you look at your foot, you will notice that
it's considerably wider there, before narrowing again to go up your leg.
The braille book Sensational Knitted Socks really explains socks thoroughly.
It gives several options for casting, on, working heel flaps and gussets,
and binding off, as well as several techniques for sock knitting.  It gives
patterns, but they are not in the braille text, drat it.  However, it also
gives stitch dictionaries, which I have used to create my own socks.  Easy
to do, really.
As to technique, personally, I favor knitting 2 at a time on circular
needles.

sure of their meaning.

 

Can someone explain what is the "heel flap", as well as what is the
"gusset?"
