I just sent you a pattern I found on the internet.  However, I usually
figure out my gauge with the yarn I want, figure out the measurements I
want, do  little math, and cast on how ever many stitches I calculated.
According to a book I have about hats, if I'm reading it right, a child 5-10
years old takes about a 19-inch hat, and a small adult takes about 20
inches.  So anything between 18-20 inches should do.  Ribbing is very
stretchy, so it expands as needed, within reason.

There's a spiral hat pattern in a book I just bought from BlindMice.  The
book is called Knit Accessories, and has tons of patterns.
Or a Google of something like free knit pattern hat will turn up quite a
lot.

I want to knit a hat for my grand daughter who is 5. I can either knit using
circular needles or regular needles. Does anyone have a pattern? I have also
knit a diagonal knit pattern scarf for her. These will match.
