Like you do on a pot holder, use a purl stitch at your half way point and
your last stitch, in the round.
This will make the circle, fold upon itself and make a nice, flat bag.

Say you have 36 stitches, your purls would be stitches, 18 and 36.
This can be done on the loom or needles.

I think, if you're making a bookbag, knitting flat might be better, because
you want it to come out flattish. In which case, you need to have selvedge
stitches on both sides to seam it together.

Thanks, Have you done this before? I just love this list! I'm going to do
this with cotton yarn until I have the size of book bag I like, and sew the
bottom together, and fold down the top with the draw string inside the fold
down, and sew it in place. I usually use a size 5 needle for dishcloths, so
that is what I will do. I'll let you know how it works out. My yarn is
variegated, so I'm not going to change color like Tracey suggested, but it
sounds fun for a different project. It just occurred to me that this would
be good for a potholder.
I better get busy.

Yes, you would need an odd number so that your first stitch on every row,
your selvage stitch, would be good.
