So, there are two slip knot methods-- for crochet anyway.
The first one is:
1. Hang your thread over your thumb, short-end to the outside, long
strand towards the inside.
2. take your short-end and cross it over your long thread.
3. Keeping your short-end in place (crossed over the long thread) take
the thread hanging below the crossed over piece and push a loop up
into the loop created by your crossed over short-end pull the thread
of your newly created loop in the center until it makes a firm knot.
Finished result, long thread with knot around it that can be adjusted
by pulling on the long thread to tighten or loosen.

Second method is the magic loop:

lay your yarnover the top of your thumb, short-end toward the palm.
1. wrap the short-end around your thumb and under the long thread.
2. Pull the loop off your thumb so the short-end is going towards your
left, and is underneath the long thread; the long thread on topgoing
towards your rightand the loop is where your thumb was. Now reach your
needle through the center of the loop grab your long thread pull it
through and make a chain.

The wonderful thing about the magic loop is when you are finished with
the piece, or the round or whatever your pattern calls for, you simply
pull the short-end to tighten things up.
