I don't think I ever drop the yarn.  I use what my local yarn store owner calls the flick method, holding the yarn in my right hand and using my right index finger to flick it over the point of the needle for the wrap. 
I think there's a description of continental knitting in the Stich 'n Bitch book, available in braille on Bard.  However, I tried to use directions in that book way back when I picked up knitting again after many years of not doing it, and the directions were pretty confusing.  I had to find an actual knitter to remind me in person what to do.

Welcome back. So nice to have you with us again. I remember that years ago, Annette taught a continental style of knitting. It is the European method not English. I hope some one out there knows where to get the instructions. I do remember it had something to do with wrapping the working yarn through the fingers on your left hand. I never got the hang of it. However, I use a modified method by using my left fingers to wrap the working yarn around the right needle. This way, I don’t ever have to drop the yarn in order to wrap it around the needle with my right hand. Can’t do that with purl stitches however. The continental method is supposed to be a lot faster, so hope you can learn it. Annette’s class was a phone class so I wasn’t able to save any instructions for the class.
