Joyce made the point that the long cord might be a hazard, so, I'm going to get some cute clips. If it were my grandson's mittens, I would measure with his specific jacket. Sometimes the winter coat has a zip in lining, so it could go between the two layers even.

That’s a great idea! Could you crochet something that would be sturdy enough and hold tight enough under the mittens deserve this purpose instead of finding clips?
