Terri,
That is because the sizes very from company to company.  

This is why it is so important to make a gage swatch before jumping into a project.

I count the same way and I have tested it with my gage but it sometimes will fit perfectly in the hole smaller than the size that is on the needle.

Hi Terri,
I count up from zero being the smallest hole. Sometimes a gage has double zero, which makes counting the holes incorrect. You may want someone to make sure your gage doesn't have a double zero size. 
With the larger needles, I count down 15, 13, 11, 10-1/2, and 10 and so on. I found an unfinished afghan in my basement, and it seemed like there was too much writing on the end of the needle. I doubted my measurement that said it was a number 10. I thought it was 10-1/2, but it was really a 10. I was correct. I don't know what the other writing was.

Yes I agree it would be great to have braille on knitting needles as well as chrochet hooks.  The problem with using the gauge for knitting needles is I have had someone tell me my needle says size 8 and when I put it into the guage I will also fit very nicely in the 7 hole so how do we really know what the size is?

Hi Tracey,
i have labelled a Knitting Gauge in Braille with Dimo Tape. I have several others that are not labelled in Br. It would be nice if a company would label  a Knitting Guage in Brailleusing the Braille on the metal like Elegant Insights does for there jewelry  in Braille.  in that way the Braille will not fall off.  Has anyone seen a comeapany that labels Knitting or Crochet items in Braille? It would be nice if we could find  Crochet Hooks that have Braille also on the metal hook.

Great ideas. I also am tired of counting up or down in the holes in a needle sizer.
A yarn untangler would be fantastic. I have been sorting with the help of a friend my 4 large bins of yarn, and now I have a bag of tangled yarn to separate. There are many many skeins of great yarn though. 
My original idea would be a magical way to fix orthopedic problems in my hands and arms so as not to loose any crafting time. A torn rotator cuff is what needs fixing next. I knit until it says stop.
