Sure Henry. I was just telling the cooking class that it is a 26 row
pattern, and has several kinds of twist stitches as well as many cables. I
love it.

Hi Bernice, when you do find that Irishmans Fishermans Afghan, would you
consider teaching it to us or pass it along privately for someone else to
have a go at teaching it please?
Thank you, and, Terry and I will see you in the bakery shortly, big smile.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I get bored just knitting. I guess my next
one will be a stop and go project. The more complicated the more I like it.
My favorite pattern has been an Irish fisherman's afghan. It took quite a
long time for me to memorize it. It was quite a few years ago, so I don't
have it memorized any more. I'm trying to get the braille pattern together
for someone on the list. The book it came from is extremely old, and I'm
sure it isn't in print any more. I am looking for someone to read it to me
so I can fill in the missing parts. I would to make it again.
Thanks,
Bernice

Bernice,

Because of the multi-directional knitting that makes up log cabin patterns,
using something other than garter stitch can throw off how the rectangles
line up. Your tension can also be an issue.

You might be able to find a lace pattern that gives you the same row and
stitch gauge as your garter stitch. Maybe a moss stitch. Cables will be
difficult to match up your gauge as they pull the stitches together and give
you a shorter row than garter or stockinette.

The focus of log cabin knitting is the color arrangement to form a visual
pattern with the squares and rectangles. Also keep in mind that if you keep
the different colored blocks and add a pattern, the overall effect might be
very visually busy.

HTH,
Annette

I'm wondering if it is the pattern or system you use for an afghan. The
trick will be compensating for the condensing aspect of a cable. I just
wondered if anybody had done a log cabin using other stitches.

I made a pair of fingerless mitts using the log cabin pattern. They are
really neat. The pattern isn't too hard, so long as you keep track of which
side is the "right" side.

I don't see why you couldn't add cables to a pattern, so long as the square
you were working on was big enough.

A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, by Barbara Walker and available from NLS,
has a whole chapter on cable patterns.

Tracy
