When beginning a new craft, you will have some discomfort in your hands & arms as you are using muscles in a different way. I tell my students discomfort is ok because you are using new muscles, but pain is not ok. When a craft is painful, you should set it aside & let the pain subside & let the healing begin. When it comes to knitting, If you have pain in your hands/arm from struggling to knit/purl stitches, then your tension is too tight.

I'm not sure if the next tip helps in needle knitting, but when you put stitches on your needle, loosen the stitches a bit before you begin the next row. Again, I do not know if this will work with needle knitting, but I do know it works with loom knitting.

Wishing you the best as you begin this new craft.

Courtney
