[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Want to know Wednesday

I really don't remember "words" of encouragement, but there were actions! There was a craft class known by something else, scheduled twice a week for all students in my class at the school for the blind from third grade through sixth I think. We did many things with paper, yarn, string and clay and probably other things. Later we could elect to take baasket weaving or rug making. One summer before my sixth grade year, I informed my mother that she was going to teach me to sew. She asked me what I wanted to make, and I answered gym clothes, thinking they did not have to be made perfectly. We figured out enough techniques to make a shirt, but bought the shorts. I found a way to loop my hand over the scissors to cut on the cutting line, and it has turned out to be a better technique than I have seen elsewhere. I have taught it to many. I learned ways to thread a needle later on. We learned to knit during the winter from a housemother when we were bored when I was in about the fourth grade. We had to beg a little, but she figured out ways to show half a dozen young girs how to knit. I don't remember needing much encouragement, just a wish to do. I have passed on these discoveries to many in the last 70 years. Some have needed encouragement; there very little. Many in my family were sewers and crafters, and the big thing is that nobody se we couldn't do it. My dad made potholder looms out of iron with nails spot welded all around for many sizes of hot holder-type things—bath mats, placemats, square table protectors, purses. I guess we were pretty creative, my sister and I. After my did died during high school, we moved, and I do not know what became of those looms. Many times I have wished I still had some. The loopers stayed on much better than the commercial looms, and my daughter and granddauters would have liked to have them. Sorry, such a long story.
Best,
Ramona
