You have a plastic grid to make your design and then fill in with your back
ground color.
I am making some Christmas ornaments!
One is a Christmas tree.  I make the tree with sparkle chord and then make
my back ground.
I make 2 and put them, back to back, put a lanyard hook and stitch them
together.

I did a similar project. I used yarn on a mesh mat. It was a tiger, so there
was the black and orange of the tiger and blue for the background. My
husband outlined one color at a time for me to complete, and then another
one. It measured about 30 inches square.

I have done crewel, which is embroidery with yarn.  I did not follow a
pre-made design; I made up my own.  Offhand I can't think of how to follow
someone else's design, but others may know a way.
NLS has books on crewel, and possibly other kinds of embroidery.
