Yes, I usually use worsted.
Since I'm measuring it against my head, I can see if it's not big enough and
increase a bit more, whatever yarn I use.

Do you use worsted weight yarn? The book uses dk yarn, which I don't want to
use. I'll follow your pattern if you use worsted weight.
Thanks,
Bernice

I know I've seen stocking hat patterns, sometimes called a watch cap, but I
can't recall where.

This is what I do, working top-down:

Cast on 8 stitches and join to work in the round.

1: K1 P1.

2: Kfb each stitch, 16 st.

3: k1 p1 across.

4: * Kfb, then knit or purl the next stitch, depending what it was in the
previous row, rep from *. 1 stitch between increases.

5: Knit the knits and purl the purls.

6: * kfb, then knit or purl the next 2 st as it was in the previous row,
rep from *. 2 stitches between increases.

Carry on in this manner, increasing every other row, and each time leaving 1
more stitch between increases. There will be places where you have to
adjust your knit or purl pattern, but soon you will have it going nicely in
between the increases.

When your piece is big enough to cover the crown of your head, probably
between 65-80 stitches in worsted, stop increasing and work in plain 1x1 rib
until you feel it's long enough. Being top down, you can try it on as you
go.

Bind off in pattern with a stretchy bind-off, and there you are.

I have made this hat a lot, and it always comes out well. The increases
creat a swirl or pinwheel pattern which I think is quite nice.

Tracy
