[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Help with pattern

I would be tempted to knit it all in one piece, with as many repeats of the
pattern as necessary to have the width I want. I'm sure Dixie will see your
email and have a suggestion. I'm surprised that the pattern doesn't have
instructions on how to put strips of it together. One more idea. I wonder if
the scallops fit together, so, putting it together would work?
Good luck. I hope someone has some bright ideas.

Subject: [NFB-Krafters-Korner] Help with pattern

I found a free pattern for an afghan strip that looks really nice. The
problem is the edges aren't straight, it curves in and out. The pattern says
to sew the strips together but I don't know how to do that. I put the
pattern here since it's a free pattern anyway. Here's the pattern. Any help
would be appreciated.

Beeton's Willow Leaf Strip

by Vicki Monthei

I developed an afghan strip from a stitch pattern in 1870 Mrs. Beeton's
Guide to Embroidery, Crochet

and Knitting. She calls it "Knitted Quilt" but the pattern looks like willow
leaves to me. It's quite easy

to work despite the 28 pattern rows. The last 14 rows repeat the first 14
rows, just shifted over 2

stitches. All the wrong-side rows are simply: slip the first stitch, then
knit and purl. For wider strips,

add a multiple of 4 stitches. Mrs. Beeton suggests alternating gray and red
strips but you choose the

color(s) you like best.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, slip, yarn over, knit 2 together and
bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread and any
size needles will work.

Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

15 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 30 rows (3 inches) in
the stated gauge

with a 20-stitch width.

7 stitches/inch and 10 rows/inch in willow leaf pattern - blocked

with #10 crochet cotton thread and U.S. #2 (2.75mm) needles

Notes: This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting abbreviations.

Slipping every first stitch and purling every last stitch will make a nice
selvage to sew later.

Work as few or as many garter stitch border rows on the bottom and top of
the strip as desired.

Cast on 20 sts in any technique that's not too tight. (I used long-tail cast
on.)

Optional: work 6 rows of garter stitch border: sl first st p-wise, k to last
st, p1.

Row 1: (right side) Sl1 p-wise, p1, (YO, p4) repeat to last 2 sts, YO, p2.

Row 2: Sl1 p-wise, k1, (p1, k4) repeat to last 3 sts, p1, k1, p1.

Row 3: Sl1 p-wise, p1, (k1, YO, p4) repeat to last 3 sts, k1, YO, p2.

Row 4: Sl1 p-wise, k1, (p2, k4) repeat to last 4 sts, p2, k1, p1.

Row 5: Sl1 p-wise, p1, (k2, YO, p4) repeat to last 4 sts, k2, YO, p2.

Row 6: Sl1 p-wise, k1, (p3, k4) repeat to last 5 sts, p3, k1, p1.

Row 7: Sl1 p-wise, p1, (k3, YO, p4) repeat to last 5 sts, k3, YO, p2.

Row 8: Sl1 p-wise, k1, (p4, k4) repeat to last 6 sts, p4, k1, p1.

Row 9: Sl1 p-wise, p1, (SKP, k2, p4) repeat to last 5 sts, SKP, k2, p2.

Row 10: Sl1 p-wise, k1, (p3, k4) repeat to last 5 sts, p3, k1, p1.

Row 11: Sl1 p-wise, p1, (SKP, k1, p4) repeat to last 5 sts, SKP, k1, p2.

Row 12: Sl1 p-wise, k1, (p2, k4) repeat to last 4 sts, p2, k1, p1.

Row 13: Sl1 p-wise, p1, (SKP, p4) repeat to last 4 sts, SKP, p2.

Row 14: Sl1 p-wise, (k2tog, k3) repeat to last 4 sts, k2tog, k1, p1.

Row 15: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (YO, p4) repeat to end.

Row 16: Sl1 p-wise, k3, (p1, k4) repeat to last 5 sts, p1, k3, p1.

Row 17: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (k1, YO, p4) repeat to end.

Row 18: Sl1 p-wise, k3, (p2, k4) repeat to last 6 sts, p2, k3, p1.

Row 19: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (k2, YO, p4) repeat to end.

Row 20: Sl1 p-wise, k3, (p3, k4) repeat to last 7 sts, p3, k3, p1.

Row 21: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (k3, YO, p4) repeat to end.

Row 22: Sl1 p-wise, k3, (p4, k4) repeat to last 8 sts, p4, k3, p1.

Row 23: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (SKP, k2, p4) repeat to end.

Row 24: Sl1 p-wise, k3, (p3, k4) repeat to last 7 sts, p3, k3, p1.

Row 25: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (SKP, k1, p4) repeat to end.

Row 26: Sl1 p-wise, k3, (p2, k4) repeat to last 6 sts, p2, k3, p1.

Row 27: Sl1 p-wise, p3, (SKP, p4) repeat to end.

Row 28: Sl1 p-wise, k2, (k2tog, k3) repeat to last 5 sts, k2tog, k3, p1.

Repeat from row 1 for as long as needed ending with row 14 or 28, if
possible.

Optional: Finish strip with 5 rows of: sl1, k to last st, p1.

Bind off loosely in k st, leaving a long tail for sewing later. Lightly
block afghan strip. Make as many

afghan strips as needed. Sew strips together and weave in ends. Add a
knotted fringe for a Victorian

look, if desired.

Happy Knitting!
