hi i would say if you are working with leather round or flat, yes the way you stated measuring should work. the ones with the teeth should hold either flat or round lacing. this is according to the person i bought these from. i have not personally done this so i cannot tell you with certainty but from what i can tell they should work. not sure how well they would work for ribbon. the ones i purchased say 4mm when closed.
now one thng i did read is that some people like to put a bit of glue on the ends of the cord before crimping. i personally hate glue but i can see where this would be a good idea. most people say that the crimps with the teeth like the ones i purchased should not pull free under normal circumstances. i have been hesitant to try this myself and am just trying it based on others recommendations and instructions.
