Good Morning Bernice and Tracy, are these Senior Retreats just for people
from the New York area or, can anyone from anywhere join this group?
What are the dues if any?

This sounds exciting, both the retreat and the company. I thought the senior
retreat was only for newly blind people.
I love to play board and card games. It was a hobby of my ex-husband's and
mine to adapt games. We made Othello accessible before they were
commercially available. He drilled a hole at the edge of the board for each
line, and then we strung yarn to make the grid.
We often bought a travel version of a game since it was quite often played
on a peg board. We adapted the Japanese game of Go by filing a cross cut in
the top of the black pieces and leaving the white pieces in tact. We did the
same with battle ship. We roughed up the red pieces that you mark the hits
with, and left the white ones smooth.
This was back in the 1970's, a little while ago.
I am starting a card game group at my church, because I love playing card
games. I never buy pre-brailled card games. I have brailled; standard cards,
Uno, Uno Spin, Skip-bo, Rack-o, Wizard, Rage, Yahtzee Hands Down, and my
favorite Mille Borne.

I did some work with the NFB Seniors' Retreat yesterday. One of the
speakers was the couple who run 64oz Games and 64oz Braille. They said, in
addition to making overlays for games so blind people can play with sighted
people, they have made an overlay for a card-cutting machine so that a
person who enjoys making cards can use the machine.

I asked them if they could make a knitting needle size gauge with braille on
it, and they thought they could. I'm going to chase down their email and
make a formal request.

They said they do all kinds of custom jobs for people, and, once they have a
pattern, anyone can order that thing. Those are in the miscellaneous
section of their website, which I think is 64ozgames.com. They also have
64ozbraille.com, but I think that is more for products teaching braille.

Tracy
