[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Ugly trigger mitten

Yes, it is Heather. I called her about something this morning, and she gave
me an NFB task. I am kind of the unofficial administrative assistant.

The next pair I make I am going to use smaller needles, because in my old
age and experience, I am knitting more loosely. I used 4's and 6's for this
mitten.
I also have to look back at how to do an ssk. It's been quite awhile. It
says to use an ssk near the top of the hand. I know I have a file explaining
it in my documents.

Hi Bernice.
I'm also making the trigger mitts with worsted, using the same pattern as
you are. I'm just getting to the bit where I pick up stitches, so I'll be
cautious and see how it goes.
I'm using a size 6 needle. Usually I'd use a 7 for worsted, but, when I
made a swatch, the 6 made a nicer, denser fabric which should be warmer. I
have a pair of mittens made of worsted yarn, and they're warm enough until
it gets down in the 30's or less, and even then they're OK if I don't stay
out a long time.
I'm making 2 mitts at once using the 2 circular needles method, though I did
the thumb separately for each mitt using DPN's.
Anyway, thanks for the note to be careful about the picking up after the
thumb.

I had heard that the new president of NFB NY was from your area, and I
wondered if it was Heather. Please pass on my congratulations to her. I'm
sure she'll do a good job. She has plenty of energy and good ideas.
Tracy

I finished finally one of the trigger mittens. It fits and seems functional,
but it is kind of ugly. I have to do something about the base of the thumb.
I will take a new thread and sew it some, so it looks better and feels
better. I will try to duplicate the shape for the second mitten, but pick up
the stitches more effectively.

I was making adjustments all of the way, because the pattern says to use
thick d k yarn, whatever that is. I used regular worsted weight yarn.

Next, I'm going to try to find a pattern that actually uses worsted weight
yarn or maybe even a little thicker yarn.

I'm wondering if you can make the mitten double layered for more warmth?

My daughter said she wants a pair, because with her new presidency for our
affiliate, she will be doing lots of traveling.

Bernice
