Thanks Tim. I agree; saying "non print user" is much better than saying
"print handicapped". If this article appeared in the Monitor, I missed
it. I'm glad that you brought it to Mr. Hingson's attention, although
from his response I'm not sure that he understands the real difference
between the two terms. It seems he is willing to use a different term,
just that he doesn't really get that using "handicapped" is suggesting a
lack of ability, whereas "non print user" suggests choosing a different
format for reading and writing. Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

In answer to your question, here's the original article where Mr.
Hingson uses the word handicapped. There's a quote by him at the bottom.
I know it may seem like I'm splitting hairs here, but it's very
important for me to know that a representative of the NFB doesn't think
blind people are handicapped. Like I said to Mr. HIngson, our words are
really really important in how we get the message about blindness out to
